Five Years Cancer Free

Five years ago today I found out I was cancer free.

Five years ago today I found out I was cancer free.

I figured I’d say it twice to let the magnitude sink in.

Five years +1 day ago, I was at peace that the Lord was going to call me home. Facing that reality didn’t mean I had lost hope or faith in my God. My trust in God grew bigger than life on this earth.

I had done 6 months of ABVD chemo, 3 rounds of 4-day long, inpatient RICE chemo, a whammy of an autologous stem cell transplant, months of radiation and cutting-edge immunotherapy. None of it worked. A donor bone marrow transplant was my last treatment option available. It was the knot at the end of my rope. My oldest sister, Hannah, donated her stem cells and we gave it a shot.

Fast forward 60 days from my transplant. I had my PET scan the previous day. This left time for the radiologists and my doctors to review the results, and if necessary, determine the next course of treatment. I was in the waiting room. The nurse cracked the door and called “Lorelei.” I remember trying to read her tone of voice and body language. Did she know the results? She told me Dr. Worth would be in shortly.

*Knock knock*

Dr. Worth came in smiling.

You’re in “Remission.”
